NUMBER 3-MAPLE

     Around  marker #3 you will find the red maple trees. The red maples were often used to collect sap in a bucket to provide a sweet syrup for biscuits and cough medicine. When the maples are to old for that the tree can be cut for lumber if not to knotty. Wrinkles in its internal growth pattern occasionally result in curly tiger stripe planks, for gunstocks and furniture. Limbs, stump and other waste pieces will burn long and hot in the fireplace and add a fine flavor to slowly smoked meat.
