NUMBER 6- WHITE OAK

     The white oaks were used for making all different kinds of baskets and light weight containers. These were used for carrying vegetables, cotton from the patch, wool from the sheep pen and the children's lunch to school. Find a tree small in diameter, split the trunk into small pieces lengthwise and then reduce them to thin strips with a knife. Take them to the creek and soak them until they are pliable as leather and weave them into the baskets you need. Larger items will require a large tree: a big loom for the family weaver, shingles for the roof, framing for the barn loft, boards for the cabin floor. There is no end of uses for this strong and durable timber.
