Podium #2: A Mountain-Bound Sanctuary

Before 1800 the park area had elk, bison, wolves and river otters.  Now they are gone.  Hunting, and the impact of logging and farming on their habitats, decreased animal populations , until the establishment of the park in the early 1930's.

Today the park is a sanctuary again.  Dear, bears, skunks, woodchucks, and wild turkeys are often seen along the road.  Raccoon, fox and opossums prowl at night.  Early morning and late afternoon are good times for wildlife watching.  Drive slowly, syop at pull-outs, and scan the meadows and edges of the woods.
