Podium #3: Looking Back At Cades Cove

     Cades Cove, this fertile mountain valley, opened to settlement in 1819 under a treaty with the Cherokee Indians.  It was mostly wooded then, but settlers soon cleared most of the valley for farms and homesteads.  By 1850, over 700 people were living here.
